Founded in 1920 in Aix-en-Provence, Le Roy René is a family business specialising in the production of Provençal confectionery.
According to legend, it was during the wedding of the ‘Good King’ René to Jeanne de Laval that his pastry chef made a sweet in the shape of a smile.
King René offered it to Jeanne; when she tasted it, her face lit up. The court, surprised and curious, asked: “But what do you call these sweets that make the Queen smile?” The King is said to have replied: “Di calin soun”, “They are hugs”!
In 1920, Ernest Guillet opened a small confectionery workshop in the heart of Aix-en-Provence, filled with the delicious aromas of toasted almonds, candied melon, honey and pistachios. They were so delicious that Ernest’s nougats and calissons quickly became the most sought-after delicacies in Provence.
A century later, three generations of nougat makers, calisson makers, chocolatiers and confectioners have succeeded one another at the factory.
Today, combining tradition and modernity, Confiserie Le Roy René is actively committed to protecting the environment and adopting a responsible approach, using sustainable materials and eco-friendly equipment, such as its 1,200 solar panels.
